Once a year in downtown Livermore Falls, the clock is turned back to an earlier time... a time before cell phones, computers and reality TV... a time when cars were built to last for decades, music didn't require parental warning labels, and corn was still considered a vegetable rather than a starch.
History Night in Downtown Livermore Falls began four years ago as a Middle School project designed to teach local kids about what life was like for residents back in 1946, the year following the end of World War II. Downtown was a beehive of activity, filled with retail stores, a movie theater and live entertainment. The air was thick with the hope of a peaceful, prosperous future and the joy of families reunited as their men returned home from the battle-zones of Germany and Japan. With help from the Downtown Betterment Group, the Jay-Livermore-Livermore Falls Chamber of Commerce and scores of volunteers, Downtown Livermore Falls was transformed to the downtown of yesteryear, and people from all over Western Maine came out to enjoy a special night of good, old-fashioned fun and entertainment.
The event, originally entitled "Main Street USA", was so successful that the Livermore Falls Betterment Group decided to adopt it as an annual celebration, changing the name to "History Night" to include other decades. The rest, as they say, is history!
Fitness Stylz got into the swing of things this year, offering a special SilverSneakers fitness class set to music from the 1930s, 40s and 50s, choreographed and performed by instructor Leslie Bull. Participants enjoyed a great workout, and Fitness Stylz owner Tom Roy, wearing a vintage 1940s Zoot Suit, was a very dapper and congenial host.
